What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer? The FDE Role in the AI Era

There is a new kind of engineer wandering around the technology industry. They write code, talk to customers, inspect spreadsheets, argue with APIs, and sometimes discover that the company's most important database is called "Final_Final_2.xlsx".

This person is a Forward Deployed Engineer.

A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, works directly with customers to understand messy business problems and turn them into production software. Unlike a traditional engineer who may receive a specification, the FDE often has to discover what the specification should have been.

The Workflow-First Approach

A company may have a CRM, three spreadsheets, two legacy systems, a WhatsApp group and one employee who knows how everything works. The employee is usually on leave when the integration begins.

The FDE starts with the workflow, not the technology.

Where does information enter? Where does it get copied? Where does someone wait? Where does a human make the same decision 400 times a month? Only after finding these places does the engineer ask whether AI, automation, an API, or ordinary software is the right answer.

Part Engineer, Part Detective, Part Translator

That makes the FDE part engineer, part detective and part translator.

They must understand the business well enough to ask sensible questions, and understand software well enough to build the answer.

Why AI Makes This Model More Interesting

The rise of AI makes this model more interesting. AI coding tools can make engineers faster at designing, building, testing and maintaining systems. The scarce resource increasingly becomes judgment: knowing what to build, what not to build, and what will survive contact with reality.

The best FDE does not deliver a presentation explaining what could be done.

They sit beside the person doing the work.

Then they return the next morning to discover that reality has changed again.

That is not a problem.

That is the job.
